Jim never really got into music until he discovered college radio, particularly his local station (WUNH)’s Monday Night Lineup which was, in this order: smooth jazz, skronky jazz, funk, techno, trance, and metal. It changed his understanding of what music could be, and moved him so deeply that he later spent a couple of years as a DJ at that same station. Ever since, he’s been obsessed with looking for that rare groove, and finding offbeat artists making interesting choices.
Jim made embarrassing electronic music starting in high school and on into college. He majored in music composition, focusing on chamber pieces and electronic player pianos, before getting sidetracked into film production. For the last dozen or so years he’s worked as a cinematographer and film professor. When he’s found time to make music, it’s been largely sample-driven rap, ambient works, east coast surf rock, and film scores. His sample-heavy beat productions led him toward DJing, and inform his approach to not just playing a succession of songs, but creating a collage of musical elements. Jim’s tastes still run to the left of the dial, though he happily mixes in “guilty pleasures” without feeling a shred of guilt. He’s excited to chat with you about what you’d like to hear, and craft a playlist that’ll have everyone jammin’ and shazammin’. /
Jim rocks! We had Jim DJ our friend Kelly’s birthday and he knew how to keep the energy up, but also slow it down when the special moments came. Even surprised me with a couple of deep cuts! I definitely would recommend Jim for anyone looking for a fun and professional MC.
